Mattias Svensson

Mattias Svensson was born in Ystad 1971. Composition studies with Hans Gefors and Rolf Martinsson at the Malmoe Academy of Music and theory studies with P-G Alldal and Lars-Erik Rosell at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Mattias has composed mainly chamber music, but also chamber opera, orchestral music and electro acoustic music. He taught musicology at the University of Lund 1997-2000. Since 2000 he is Head of Gotland School of Music Composition. Latin was commissioned in 2004 by VOX. The piece was meant to have dramatic qualities without using a text as its primary means. My solution was to use a text by Lennart Helsing as a silent background. The silent text appears in the end of the piece and functions as an inspiration for a nonsense improvisation. The first part of the piece consists of slow permutations, chords turn into melodies and melodies into chords, accentuations change and consonants develop into more complex sounds.
