Stefán Jón Bernharðsson

Stefán Jón Bernharðsson graduated from the Reykjavík School of Music, where his teacher was Joseph Ognibene, in 1998. He then studied with prof. Frøydis Ree Wekre at the Norwegian State Academy of music in Oslo until 2005. Since 2000 he has been a permanent member of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, currently as associate principal. He is a former solo-horn of the Malmö Opera and played 1.horn in Orkester Norden from 1997 to 2001. He regularly performs as a soloist with orchestras and in festivals and has also recorded solo concertos with both the I.S.O. and the Reykjavík Chamber Orch. Last year Stefán won the ConocoPhillips music prize competition in Oslo, 2nd prize in the Lieksa International French Horn Competition in Finland and 3rd prize in “Cittá di Porcia” International Horn Competition in Italy. Stefán actively performs and commissions new music both as a soloist and with his group, the Nordic Chamber Soloists. In august 2006 he gave the icelandic premiere of Ligeti’s horn trio.
