Kjartan Ólafsson
Kjartan Ólafsson (1958) graduated 1984 from the Reykjavík College of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He continued his studies in Utrecht in Holland, Institute of Sonology, where he concentrated on electronic music, and later at the Sibelius Academy in Finland where his composition teachers were Einojuhani Rautavaara and Paavo Heininen .
Since 1988 Kjartan has worked on the artificial intelligence program, CALMUS (Calculated Music) which is specially designed for the composition process of contemporary music.
Among works composed via CALMUS are: Solo pieces, chamber music, electronic music, concerts and pieces for symphony orchestra.
Kjartan presently works in Iceland as a composer, teacher, producer of the music festivals ErkiTid and Dark MusicDays, and the developer of CALMUS. From 1998 he has been the chairman of the Society of Icelandic Composers.
MOZAIK
Will be premiered at NMD 2006.
MOZAIK (2006) for a saxophone quartet and tape is composed for the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet with financial support from NOMUS. In the piece - short segments from various less known Mozart compositions are used as a input material for the artificial intelligens composing system CALMUS.
MOZAIK consist of numerous small partials, both insturmental and electronical, with or without any relations - in the overall composition.
